very sick hog
hi all.
i have a hedgehog, katie, she has been in my care for a couple of weeks now and whilst being treated for all ailments and given all vits that she can possibly have, shes going down hill fast and i'm at a loss what to do with her.last night she stopped eating completely, she is drinking loads,i didn't know whether to try rehydration fluids and stop putting food down for now. shes determined to fight and whilst she is so am i!

Re: very sick hog
Poor little girl.
Do you think she will take being syringe feed? A mix of goats milk/cat food/weetabix/water so it can be syringed.
Is she weeing/pooing OK?

Re: very sick hog
i gave her a little syringe feed earlier, she would only take a little
will try adding goats milk and weetbix to the mix and see how she goes but it doesn't look good.she was okay when i first got her just losing a bit of fur, shes had baytril etc and yesterday started going downhill pretty quick.but shes lively and seems a fighter,so will keep trying

Re: very sick hog
I am crossing my fingers as I type!
I really hope she pulls through, sounds like a fighter.
Keep us updated,
Bethany.

Re: very sick hog
Jo, I do hope she survives. It would be so sad if she was to go, but she sounds like she should pull through. It is really hard trying to feed them, especially when they don't want none.
Good luck with her.
Good luck with her.

managed to get a couple of syringes worth down her every hour last night. shes refused her last feed,so i'll leave her for a bit and hopefully she'll feed again in a while. she hasn't pooped though, hoping shes just hanging on to it.

Re: very sick hog
This is the first thread I have come to see today, and am so relieved she is still hanging on.
You must be shattered Jo.

Re: very sick hog
i managed to get a couple of short winks this morning, but i think its going to be another night of it!
she refused her feed at nine and wouldn't eat again until lunch,i've put some of the goop down in a bowl,as well as other bits ands bobs, but shes not touching them!
i really don't know what else to do with her other than force feeding, which i'm not really forcing her, once she realises the goops in there she can't get it down quick enough.

Re: very sick hog
The fact she wants it has to be good, lets hope she gains strength and eats/drinks by herself soon.
Re: very sick hog
cheers and hopefully she might just do it.but it makes me wonder about eventual release if she does make it,especially if she can go downhill so fast
i promised myself i wouldn't get attached to them anymore, but shes wormed her way in as they all tend to do

Re: very sick hog
It is always a very sad time when one of them dies, because you always question if you could have done something better. I'm sure we all do our best when it comes to these amazing creatures, and if you have done your best then nothing more can be done.
I think you are doing a fantastic job, I really do!
Bethany.
