My Stories: The Rescued Hedgehog
I sometimes write to the local Hedgehog rescue to help support them. When I do I always include a story or two about Hedgehogs.
Here is one that I wrote in Spring 2008.
All stories I write to them are included in their newsletter and on their website:
The small Hedgehog was slowly coming around from Hibernation. Its head slowly coming more into view as it uncurled from the tight ball it had remained in for a while. They listened to its deep breathing, eyes shut tight, but coming round.
They left the table where the box was situated, containing the Hedgehog. It had been rescued, found in their garden in the cold of Winter, on its last legs.
After removing the Ticks and any other pests, they had fed it up to a suitable state. Watching it as it snoozed gently in its tight ball, They called it 'Spike' - they had made it a box and had filled it with leaves and grass, a little 'nest' for him.
Half an hour later, there was Spike, shiny eyed and looking in great condition. It had been the first time they had seen him since he first went into hibernation; they knew that release was soon.
Spike gained weight and it was soon time for his release in Spring, ready for mating. It was a sad time, but he would not be so far away, only in the garden - and after all, the Vet and lcal Hedgehog Rescue had said that he would be OK now he had put on weight.
At around evening/dusk they took him out into the sunset - Ready for a new life.
They cried a bit for this was a great hedgehog, but why cry when they had rescued him?
They promised to feed him every night and look after him. They watched as he disappeared into the undergrowth in their garden, listened as he grunted - pig-like and gone.
He returned every night to be fed on cat/dog meat. They even hand made a hedgehog house for him.
It made them feel better knowing they had made a difference
