Re: Another two
well I gave him one last night, done what I was told to do to prepare it, got up this morning and it was still there. Well back to the drawing board. Hes only lost a couple more grames today. Will try somthing else tonight.
Re: Another two
Tonight I have been told to get some puppy food mix it with water and mash it all together. Because he must be very hungry I going to mix one or two slugs in it to try and start him off, I know I shouldnt feed him slugs but I am getting desperate now.
Re: Another two
I have heard hedgies have a sweet tooth - once banana is brown and mushy it goes sweet, could try that. I tried it with my two a couple of weeks ago, one ate it one didn't.
Raisin's maybe, other dried (unsweetened) fruit, chopped. Goats milk might tempt him.
It's hard finding something to get them eating.
Good luck.

Re: Another two
Another night of very little eaten if anything. His poops are rather soppy this morning for the first time. Started him on antibiotics last night, bit difficult as he is still very strong and wont open mouth. But he as lost a few more grammes, its stating to worry me now. Will try and worm later, dont now how yet, maybe this is the problem.
Re: Another two
Hmm. You are right, it could well be worms.
You are doing fine, you should find a food that he likes soon, hopefully.

Re: Another two
try wrapping him in a tea-towel so his heads just poking out.put your thumb and finger either side of his mouth and gently prise his mouth open (watch out for nipping though!) forcing the syringe into the side of his mouth, once open he should bite down on the syringe. if you make a bit of honey water and mix that with the baytril he might take it easier (if he likes honey that is). or sometimes if you just rub the side of their mouth with the syringe they bite it and you can just administer it that way.
hope this helps, sometimes its easier said than done and is easier if you can get the hog to relax in your lap before you make your move.

Re: Another two
He has just been wormed, he had some wormer on a piece of cheese, he liked the wormer off then eat the cheese. Thats one job done.
Re: Another two
Well for the first time in 7 days he as put on a few grammes, he dosn't look quite as round as normal, but still is very strong, not sure what was eaten as there is so much food in there, but he loves cheese.
Re: Another two
he was weighed this morning and seemed to put on weight for the first time in 9 days. Dont know how as he dosn't seem to have eaten much if anything. But its his poos thats worrying, a couple are normal (brown and firm )but a few are runny and looks like its got white bits in, he hasn't had wax worms so I dont think its them. He is on wormer at the moment 0.05 telmin at night and 0.1 panacure in the morning, both on cheese. And he is having baytril dripped between is teeth, as he his still very strong and I still can't open his mouth.
Re: Another two
Could it be the cheese making his poo look odd?
Some do need persuading to open their mouths to allow you to put a syringe in, I am stubborn and will keep at it, gently rubbing just inside the side of the mouth until the clamp their teeth on the syringe then you can give the medicine.

Re: Another two
he is only having a very small piece, just big enough to put the wormer on, but I wish he would eat his proper food just as fast. Most of the time his poos are quite normal but today they were like a jelly consistancy with white bits in.
Re: Another two
Ron, I think you are doing an excellent job, so keep it up. I hope it is nothing too bad.

Re: Another two
At the moment hes holding steady at between 280g and 290g, but his poos are making me worry if it is poos, I know what a normal poo is like and I am seeing these but also I am seeing a white gunge, jelly like substance with white bits in. Dont know what end its coming out of. This morning he was tucking into a bowl of crickets and meal worms, I wish he would eat cat food as fast. I have been worming him in the mornings on panacure and at night with telmin with baytril as well.

Hi Ron
I think that if you are seeing no improvement by now with Baytril then your hog probably needs another antibiotic. I would really advise it having something injectable. I know that you aren't keen on needles in which case couldn't your vet give daily injections. Oral Baytril is very good as long as it is given twice daily & you can guarantee a full dose each time which I doubt. It may not be responding because it is not the right antibiotic for the particular bacteria causing the problem. If you leave it too long before changing the treatment it will be too late.
Re: Another two
Well today I decided as he wasnt getting any better or worse for that matter it was time to see the vet, He said everything that I had done was good and maybe he wasnt getting the baytril down. He decided to INJECT, he stood between me and the door, someone had told him what I was like. He said he would give two injections, but i did manage to watch everything he did, one was baytril not quite sure what the other one was, but hes haveing 2 more on thursday and 2 on friday. On friday if I am up to it I can have ago. He now wants to see some of the poos so I need to collect them. He is going to see if he can find out why there are so many dying.
Re: Another two
He was seen eating a little cat meat last night, now I need to find one he likes, he also ate a little cooked mince in the night, not much but its a start. He is haveing to more jabs today.
Re: Another two
He has just had a good feed off mealworms, and looking at the mess in his box something must be going in at the one end, hes at work with me at the moment under my desk asleep.
