The BBC got it wrong.
In response to this BBC news item I have sent an email. I know many others have too, so hopefully our message will get across.
Dear BBC
The article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7750560.stm
is very worrying. A hedgehog now at anything less than 500g is facing certain death during hiberbnation. 500g is the minimum, 600g is preferred. I am a registered carer with the British Hedgehog Presevation Society, and along with the many others carers across the country spend time advising what to do - at this time of year the big message is a hedgehog under 500g needs our help and at any time of year ANY hedgehog out in the daytime is in need of help, sadly and very alarmingly the message from the article went againt everything we know to be correct.
The hedgehog is in very real danger of extinction, as Britains only spiney mammal we should be doing all we can to stop that happening but people who are broadcast giving out such misinformation are condeming these wonderful animals to death.
Please help us to help hedgehogs by getting the correct information out there.

Re: The BBC got it wrong.
That is............
How dare they say all that, it just shows that they have not done their research properly. This is very disturbing, to think that this message has been wrongly broadcast to all those people out there. Those people will now pass it on to others. What was a small video that the BBC broadcast, is now long-term damage to Hedgehogs.
How do I send an Email to them?
Bethany.

Here is my reply to them:

I was shocked to see that the information you published about 'Hedgehog Hibernation Fears' was incorrect.
I look after and care for Hedgehogs when ever possible and am appalled to see the information which you published was wrong.
Hedgehogs should be at least 500g in order to survive, but we prefer them to be 600g if they stand the best, possible chance.
I cannot believe that a Television channel such as yourself had broadcast such wrong information to thousands of people without doing your research properly. If you had done, you would have found out the correct information about Hedgehogs.
What I ask of you is that you publish the correct version as soon as possible before many UNDERWEIGHT HEDGEHOGS DIE. At this time of year it is crucial that any are picked up below 600g.
Hedgehogs are now endangered, and with about 50% already gone, they need all the help they can get. For the last few years I have spent most of my time advertising and informing people about how to care for Hedgehogs. The information which you broadcast has gone against what I, and many other people know as 'right'. In long-term, this incorrect information could be very damaging.
I think you will find that so many people agree with me.
Do you really want to be known as a new chennel which has published incorrect information? A news channel which has not done its research properly and has killed off many, many Hedgehogs because of incorrect information.
If you do not publish an updated and correct version, we will continue to make conplaints to you. Also, if you do not publish the correct version then maybe you are just not facing your mistakes.
SO PUBLISH THE CORRECT VERSION ASAP PLEASE!
Bethany.
